Ali B's Airpod - Funk/Soul/Breaks & Booties
Still most definitely flying a metaphorical flag with "I like breaks" in agreeably trendy font across it, Ali B's weekly one hour mix tape on Kiss 100 can be heard at your leisu
re in podcast format. Good to see someone still unashamedly caning the happy-go-lucky sound we used to call breaks and occasionally 'big beat'* (now there's a blast from the past, what?) but what we now call "nu funk". Ali doesn't always know the names of the tracks...and sometimes there aren't any - it's all about the killer hook. Have a click on the air logo, why don't you, for more info about the label, the nights - the whole shebang.
Hospital Records - Drum & Bass
Someti
mes a label is so far ahead of the game there isn't much about that can touch it. And so it is with Hospital Records. The imprint
Tony Colman and Chris Goss started back in 1996 has grown into something of an empire (and still keeping vinyl alive!) with the Hospital name lending itself to a seemingly endless number of medical establishment puns. Despite Colman's frequent invocation of the disco call, the podcast (weekly, usually) can be a compelling listen and the most up front stuff in D&B you're likely to hear.
Howes Fishing - Rod & Line
Black Zonkers. Not a euphemism or marital aid, but a fly of the fishing variety. You
'll hear many baffling phrases such as these during
Railton Howes' weekly, half hour fishing podcast. Howes and his team of experts go into intimate detail pertaining to what is being caught Tyneside, by whom and how much it weighed. You'll also learn which lakes and waterways are open for fishing and...oh...it doesn't matter. You won't have a flipping clue what they're on about, unless you've regularly got the rod in your hand. Make no mistake though, Howes is a pro - this is Newcastle's answer to the shipping forecast.
Ibiza Voice - House/Minimal
Ibiza, it's an island. They speak Spanish there. Str
ong associations with repetitive beats. Causes DJs of a certain age to go all misty-eyed. Known to be a tad crowded in the summer months. It's voice, were it to speak, would not (as you might imagine) be the grating, tortured tones of a rock stripped of it's dignity by decades of having it large, it would be Ibiza Voice Dot Com. Here you'll find pretty much anything you might want to know about dance music on Ibiza, if that's your bag. But more importantly they knock out a regular podcast of some very well put together minimal housey housey. Always a roller and perfect for completing some incredibly tedious repetitive task or just doing the housework.
Radio 538...Dance Department - House/Progressive
In the beg
inning, he was there. Life to him is just one big orgasm. This crazy Dutch bastard made me like house music again. Dennis Ryer's Radio 538 Dance Department tops my list of the best produced dance music podcasts around. Just goes to show how much difference a little extra effort on the faders and a massively enthusiastic Amsterdammer on the mic can make. Though on occasion Ryer strays dangerously close to funky house territory, this weekly download cannot be beaten for the kind of big, bassy, quality house and progressive that makes you wish you were standing in front of the big speakers. Guest mix each week too.
There's ple
nty of film review podcasts out there. The Guardian's Film Weekly with Jason Solomons and The Film Programme on Radio 4 are two of the best. And you'd be foolish to miss Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo going at it like an old married couple on Radio 5 Live. All Britishers, you'll note, so what of the American perspective? Each week Adam Kempenaar and Matty Robinson embark on a long-haul podcast during which they discuss new releases and old - usually between themselves. Despite going deep, Kempenaar and Robinson never seem to get too bogged down in details and you'll often get a take on new releases weeks before even the press have clapped eyes on them this side of the world. Filmspotting is originally broadcast on WBEZ Chicago Public Radio.
